A Stroll Along the Stunning Via Appia Antica, the Queen of Roads
Whether you choose to walk
, cycle
, or take the bus
, the Via Appia Antica offers a unique and unforgettable experience. This extraordinary feat of engineering, dating back to 312 BC, takes you on a journey through Rome’s rich history.
Despite its historical significance, the Via Appia Antica isn’t as widely promoted as it deserves. Yet, it’s a must-see attraction for anyone spending at least three nights in Rome.
From our B&B, reaching it is straightforward:
Walk a stretch of Viale Aventino.
Continue left along the Baths of Caracalla.
Arrive at Via di Porta San Sebastiano.
Once you reach the Aurelian Walls, your journey along the famous and enchanting Regina Viarum begins.

Cartiera Latina: A Green and Cultural Oasis
Early along the Via Appia Antica, you’ll find the Cartiera Latina, a former paper mill transformed into a cultural center and the headquarters of the Appia Antica Regional Park. It hosts exhibitions and events, and features a green area equipped with tables and benches—perfect for a picnic break. For information on opening hours and activities, visit the official website of the Appia Antica Regional Park.
Catacombs and Mausoleums: A Journey Through History
Continuing along the Via Appia, you can visit:
- Catacombs of San Callisto: The largest in Rome, where numerous martyrs and 16 popes were buried.
- Catacombs of San Sebastiano: Home to well-preserved frescoes and the crypt of the martyr Sebastian.
Among the most significant mausoleums along the route are:
- Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella: An imposing funerary monument from the 1st century BC, later integrated into the Castrum Caetani in the 13th century.
- Mausoleum of Gallienus: Attributed to Emperor Gallienus, featuring a circular structure with semicircular apses and a ring of columns.
- Circular Mausoleum: Characterized by a cylindrical drum on a square base, with a cross-shaped burial chamber.
